if I were a lady of leisure …

… one of the first things that I would do is make my own butter. I know I don’t link much here and it’s really boring for you because there’s no fun clicking and songs and dances, but I couldn’t resist this (it’s not a song or dance, by the way):

Although butter is one of the things I am very unlikely to tackle myself, I DID roast my own pistachios yesterday! At the spice shop that recently opened on our street I was buying dried fruit – dates, pineapple, banana (chewy, not crispy), apricots – and looking for salted nuts. I discovered that the owner only stocks natural nuts, but he suggested that I buy some anyway, and he’d tell me how to roast them – which he did. I bought a couple of handfuls of pistachios at 42 shekels per kilo. At home I spread them in a small roasting tray (toaster oven size), ground salt on top, and added enough water to spread the salt all over the nuts. I roasted the nuts at 180 degrees Celsius for 10 minutes, shook the pan and continued roasting them for another 10 minutes. The result was very delicious, and I was amazed that such a painless process could produce such a delightful result!
